Designing Learner-Centric MOOCs: Week 4 - Creating LxIs and Effective Orchestrating of MOOCs
Dear Learners,
In Week 3, you learnt about creating LbDs and LxTs, and looked at some tools and recommendations for online assessment. Some good responses were observed on the discussion threads regarding the utility of LxTs, which were also discussed during the live interaction with Prof. Sahana Murthy. Additionally, there several other useful discussions during this live interaction on structuring and planning of your own MOOCs, appropriate mapping of credits to the number of MOOC hours, incorporation of LCM elements in content from varied fields, etc. In case, you have missed being a part of this interaction, you can still find it on the course portal.
In our last week of the course, we will be focusing on creation of LxIs, and finally orchestration of a MOOC. We offer varied LxTs on research and practice around discussion forums and introduced other discussion forum applications that you may consider for your own MOOC.
As this is the last week of the course, we have also posted the end of course survey form. We would request you to kindly fill in the form to successfully complete all course activities.
The assignment pattern for this week is similar to previous weeks, i.e., a knowledge quiz (KQ), a reflection quiz (RQ) and three assimilation quizzes (AQ). Though AQs and KQ have been released with the content, RQ for this week will be released on 22 March. Accordingly, the due date for the AQs and KQ is on or before Wednesday (27 March 2019, 11:59 PM IST), while RQ is due on or before Wednesday (7 April 2019, 11:59 PM IST).
To access the content, please use the URL: https://onlinecourses.nptel.ac.in/noc19_ge15/unit?unit=6&lesson=25
As this is learner-centric course, we highly encourage you to participate on LxIs, and contribute to the forum by answering some of the questions/comments/views that your peers have posted. This will significantly enhance your learning experience in this course.
Hope you have a great Week 4 learning!
Thank you,

Tips for engaging discussions on Ask a Question
Dear Learners,
It has been a great week, seeing your engaging discussions on the discussion forum. However, we have observed some repetitive and isolated posts on the forum. For instance, many learners are curious about the technical details for creating their first MOOCS, particularly LeDs/videos and we also have posts from learners creating their interactive videos with Reflection Spots. Such isolated posts will lead to less fruitful discussions.
How can this be avoided? Before adding a new post on the forum:
- Search for messages using the Search feature
- Go through the messages in the search results
- If you find a similar post, add your feedback/query/response as a reply to this post. You may also end up finding your query already answered!
- If not, add a new post using the New Question feature
- Don't forget to tag your post with the appropriate category (LxI/Content Queries and so on)
- While replying to a post, go beyond simply agreeing or disagreeing. You can start with why you agree with the post or how the stated point has worked out in your own practice. Your response can also included other references, where a similar point was expressed.
Following this process will help you save on time and efforts and have your query answered in no time.
Thank you,

Designing Learner-Centric MOOCs: Week 3 - How to Create LbDs and LxTs?
Dear Learners,
In Week 2, we learnt about creating LeDs, and some recommendations for creation of effective LeDs. There were some good responses in discussion threads this week (LxI – Week 2) mentioning the role of reflection spots in engaging learners, assimilation of content, and performing interactions than merely watching the videos. We would request you to continue these discussion threads even in this week, and discuss more on benefits shared by your peers.
We also provided an LeD constructor to help you create your own LeD scripts on a topic along with a self-check rubric. We hope that you are in a better position now to do this for your own MOOC. Let us know, in case you have any queries regarding the same.
There were interesting questions during the live interactions with Dr. Sameer S Sahasrabudhe (e.g. ensuring effective implementation of reflection spots in an online environment, incorporation of in-class exercises in MOOCs etc.). The interaction was joined in by Prof. Tanmay Dey, who shared his own experiences during MOOC creation. In case, you have missed being a part of this interaction, you can still find it on the course portal.
In Week 3, we will be exploring more on creation of learning by doing (LbD) activities, and learner extension trajectories (LxTs). This week, we offer LxTs describing formative assessment strategies, technology tools for formative assessment, and revised Bloom’s taxonomy for effective creation of assessment questions at different cognitive levels.
The assignment pattern for this week is similar to previous week, i.e., a knowledge quiz (KQ), a reflection quiz (RQ) and three assimilation quizzes (AQ). The due date for the Assignment submission is on or before Wednesday (20 March 2019, 11:59 PM IST). To access the content, please use the URL: https://onlinecourses.nptel.ac.in/noc19_ge15/unit?unit=6&lesson=25
As this is learner-centric course, we highly encourage you to contribute to the forum by answering some of the questions/comments/views that your peers have posted. This will significantly enhance your learning experience in this course.
Hope you have a great Week 3 learning!

Designing Learner-Centric MOOCs - Week 2: How to create LeDs?
Dear Learners,
In Week 1, we learnt as to what is a learner-centric MOOC, and why is it required. There were some good discussion threads created in multiple forum categories (LxI - Week1, MOOC Analogy, and Content Queries). We would request you to continue these discussion threads even in this week and also identify, and discuss similarities and differences observed in learner-centric experiences shared by your peers.
As Prof. Sridhar Iyer reiterated during the live interaction, peer learning is one of the biggest strength of a MOOC and we hope our course format helps you in leveraging it further.
In Week 2, we will be exploring more on the learning dialog (LeD), and the process of creating LeDs. You are also provided with LxT resources on creating interactive videos as few of you enquired, during our first live session, on creation on such MOOC videos. Please note, these are given as Learning Extension Trajectories as the focus of this course is mainly on the idea of bringing learner-centricity in MOOC setting.
The assignment pattern for this week is similar to the last week, i.e., a knowledge quiz (KQ), a reflection quiz (RQ) and three assimilation quizzes (AQ). The due date for the Assignment submission is on or before Wednesday (13 March 2019, 11:59 PM IST). To access the content, please use the URL: https://onlinecourses.nptel.ac.in/noc19_ge15/unit?unit=6&lesson=25
We encourage you to contribute to the forum by answering some of the questions that your peers have posted. This will further enhance your learning experience in this course.
Hope you have a great Week 2 learning!

[Designing LCM] 8 courses with learner-centricity identified by learners till now
Dear Learners,
In the Learner Experience Interaction this week, we had asked about details from other courses where you have experienced (or designed for) learner-centricity (either as a learner or instructor).
14 threads have been created in this forum till now. Apart from this course on Designing LCM, we have seen learner-centric experiences shared from:
- NPTEL Course on "Introduction to Wireless Communication"
- Coursera course on "Python Programming - A concise introduction"
- Coursera specialization on "Teaching of English to Speakers of Other Languages"
- NPTEL Course on "Non-conventional Resources of Energy"
- NPTEL Course on "Joy of Computing"
- ISTE Workshop on Signals and Systems (Blended MOOC with regular live interactions)
- IITBombayX course on "Pedagogy for Online and Blended Teaching-Learning Process"
- IITBombayX course on "ET601Tx: Educational Technology for Engineering Teachers"
While the last two courses were from the LCM Team, it is good to see that experiences from other courses have also been shared as this becomes a learning experience for the course team about other courses and instructors who have attempted similar activities.
If you have not posted yet in this forum this will be a right time to join in this discussion. To all those who have posted, the instructions for discussion also required you to identify and discuss similarities and differences in the learner-centric experiences shared by your peers. If you haven't done that yet this would be a right time to start doing that.
Hoping to see more discussions come in during the weekend.
Thanks and Regards
Jayakrishnan
