TALE-Quiz 2 – Explanation to all questions and answers

Dear Learners,Invalid HTML tag: tag name o:p is not allowed

Thank you for actively participating in discussions related to Assignment 2.  It was also a great learning experience for me.  Many of you have raised issues particularly related to questions 1, 2, 4, 7 and 9. All answers indicated in some of the questions are not strictly incorrect.  We were asking you to select two statements which were most appropriate.  Please find below the correct answers with explanations to most of the queries raised by you.  Please keep participating and arguing.Invalid HTML tag: tag name o:p is not allowed

Module 1: Assignment 2 (Quiz 2) MCQ/MSQs from Units 6 – 10Invalid HTML tag: tag name o:p is not allowed

1.    Identify PEO statements from the following

a.     Specify, select and formulate environmental engineering systems

b.    Solve problems of social relevance applying the knowledge of electrical and electronics engineering, and/or pursue higher education and research *

c.     Engage in lifelong learning, career enhancement and adopt to changing professional and societal needs *

d.    Create, select, and apply modern engineering and IT tools to complex engineering activities with an understanding of their limitations

The PEO statements from the above four are Invalid HTML tag: tag name o:p is not allowed

b.    Solve problems of social relevance applying the knowledge of electrical and electronics engineering, and/or pursue higher education and research *Invalid HTML tag: tag name o:p is not allowed

c.     Engage in lifelong learning, career enhancement and adopt to changing professional and societal needs *Invalid HTML tag: tag name o:p is not allowed

2.    Complex engineering problems are characterized by two of the following features

a.     Have no obvious solutions*

b.    Have complex mathematical models

c.     Have significant consequences

d.    Have possibly many component parts or sub-problems *

While all the four characteristics can be associated with complex engineering problems (a) and (d) characterize complex engineering problems better than the other two.  In the presentation one characteristic we presented is “Have significant consequences in a range of contexts” not exactly the statement (c).Invalid HTML tag: tag name o:p is not allowed

3.    PO1 is “Apply the knowledge of mathematics, science, engineering fundamentals,
and an engineering specialization to the solution of complex engineering problems.” Which two of the following statements are true with regard to addressing PO1 by majority of engineering programs.

a.     Majority of engineering courses do not address this outcome.

b.    End of the chapter problems will moderately address PO1 *

c.     Assessment in many institutions includes solving complex engineering problems.

d.    Majority of courses belong to either Basic Sciences or Engineering Sciences which do not address engineering problems directly. *

The major feature of PO1 is “solving complex engineering problems”. Basic Science and Engineering Science courses do not address engineering problems at all.  Hence the statements (b) and (d) are correctInvalid HTML tag: tag name o:p is not allowed

4.    PO2 is “Identify, formulate, research literature, and analyse complex engineering problems reaching substantiated conclusions using first principles of mathematics, natural sciences, and engineering sciences”. Which two of the key components of PO2 are not addressed by the core courses of engineering programs

a.     Understanding principles and theories of engineering problems

b.    Problem identification *

c.     Understanding how to linearize a non-linear problem.

d.    Formulating identified problems *

The activities represented by statements (b) and (d) are not included in any of the core engineering coursesInvalid HTML tag: tag name o:p is not allowed

5.    PO6 is “Apply reasoning informed by the contextual knowledge to assess societal, health, safety, legal and cultural issues and the consequent responsibilities relevant to the professional engineering practice”. PO6 can be effectively addressed through two of the following activities

a.     Explore the relationships of products and services to people/society in a variety of contexts.*

b.    Course on Intellectual Properties and Patents

c.     Course on national health policy.

d.    Courses on technology-society interaction. *

The activities related to (a) and (d) are likely to address many (more than one) of the features (assess societal, health, safety, legal and cultural issues).  The activities related to (b) and (c) address only one issue each of “products and services”.Invalid HTML tag: tag name o:p is not allowed

6.    PO9 is “Function effectively as an individual, and as a member or leader in diverse teams, and in multidisciplinary settings.” PO9 is important because

a.     Every engineer is a citizen

b.    Every organization is an unique technology-people interface

c.     All engineering activities are group activities*

d.    Every engineer has to work under the direction of a boss

All statements are true.  All the features mentioned in PO9 statement are addressed in activities associated with statement (c).  When an activity is a group activity all members of the group will have to work as a team and play their designated roles. Invalid HTML tag: tag name o:p is not allowed

7.    PO10 is “Communicate effectively on complex engineering activities with the engineering community and with society at large, such as, being able to comprehend and write effective reports and design documentation, make effective presentations, and give and receive clear instructions.” PO10 can be effectively addressed through two of the following activities

a.     Give adequate weightage to the quality of writing in the project report. *

b.    Making one group of students to make a presentation to students from other branches.*

c.     Interact with fellow students through group exercises.

d.    Commenting on technical presentations by fellow students

All statements are true.  All the features mentioned in PO10 statement are addressed in activities associated with statements (a) and (b).  The important elements of PO10 includeInvalid HTML tag: tag name o:p is not allowed

·         Communicate effectively with the engineering community (peers)Invalid HTML tag: tag name o:p is not allowed

·         Communicate effectively with society at large, Invalid HTML tag: tag name o:p is not allowed

·         Comprehend reports Invalid HTML tag: tag name o:p is not allowed

·         Make effective presentations. Invalid HTML tag: tag name o:p is not allowed

·         Give and receive clear instructions.Invalid HTML tag: tag name o:p is not allowed

The activities related to (a) and (b) together address most of the elements of PO10.Invalid HTML tag: tag name o:p is not allowed

8.    PO12 is “Recognize the need for and have the preparation and ability to engage in independent and life-long learning (LLL) in the broadest context of technological change.” PO12 can be effectively addressed through two of the following activities

a.     Requiring students to take responsibility for their own learning. *

b.    Making students do a group activity.

c.     Helping students to understand their own learning processes. *

d.    Making students write 2-minute papers in some courses.

All statements are true while the most effective activities are (a) and (c).  Students get trained for LLL more by (a) and (c).  Both (a) and (c) activities belong the realm of metacognition. Improving one’s own metacognition (awareness one’s own knowledge and self-regulation of learning) is most effective for LLL.

9.    What cognitive level the given activity “Derive an expression for energy stored in an inductor” belongs to?

a.     Analyse

b.    Apply

c.     Remember *

d.    Evaluate

Deriving an expression belongs to the “Remember” level as the derivation gets presented in the classroom, lecture notes and textbook.  The student is expected to reproduce the same steps.  While occasionally a bright student may produce a new derivation, but that is not common.  The method of remembering the derivation may differ from one student to the other.Invalid HTML tag: tag name o:p is not allowed

10.  What cognitive level the given activity “Solve a given recurrence equation using divide and conquer strategy” belongs to?

a.     Analyse

b.    Apply *

c.     Remember

d.    Understand

This is a straightforward question.  The action verb is “Solve”.  The conditions include “given sequence” and “divide and conquer strategy”.  Hence the associated cognitive level is “Apply”.Invalid HTML tag: tag name o:p is not allowed
