Fundamentals of Electronic Materials and Devices: Assignment 1 solutions available

Dear All,

The detailed solutions for Assignment 1 are now available online. Please go through them and let us know through the forum if you have any questions regarding the worked solutions.

Because of an error from my side, the assignment submission closed at 8 PM, instead of the time mentioned in my email (10 PM). This is due to a typo from my side. I am really sorry for the error and in the future will double check the submission times and dates so that this does not recur.

We will have a total of 8 assignments, where we will take only best 6. So, if you could not submit Assignment 1 due to my error it will not still affect the overall assessment.

In the future, if you notice some discrepancy between the announcement and the submission dates or any other matter related to the course, please do bring to our notice so that we can correct it quickly. I apologize once again for this mistake.

Thank you,

Parasuraman

Fundamentals of Electronic Materials and Devices: Week 3 videos now available

Dear All,

In week 2 we looked at intrinsic semiconductors, which are pure, defect-free semiconductors. These are rarely used, since it is difficult to control the carrier concentration. For this purpose, controlled amounts of impurities are added. These are called extrinsic semiconductors and we will discuss these semiconductors this week.

Along with the lectures videos, there are two additional, optional lessons. The first is an optional numerical assignment on intrinsic semiconductors and it will help you with solving the weekly assignments and the final exam. The second optional lesson contains reading material on transparent conducting oxides. You will not be tested on the additional reading in the assignments and final exam.

The assignment for week 3 is also released. The due date for this assignment is Monday, Feb 26 at 10 pm.

With week 3, we are finished with the electronic materials part of the course. Starting week 4 we will look at electronic devices.

Please go through the material and let us know if there are any technical issues in accessing the content. Please also use the forum to post your questions and we will try and answer it. We will be regularly updating the course with each week's notes and assignments.

All the best.

Fundamentals of Electronic Materials and Devices: Week 1 and 2 available

Dear All,

We are ready with the material for week 1 and 2 for this course. The videos, notes, and assignments for week 1 and 2 are now available online in the course website. We are releasing the content early to enable those who have already enrolled to start learning.

There is a zeroth assignment at the beginning of week 1. This is an optional assignment and you also have the chance to check your answers as you take this assignment. Even though there is a due date for this assignment, it will not be counted towards the final evaluation. The lectures of week 1 revise aspects of solid state physics, which will be useful to understand the properties of semiconductors. At the end of the videos there is a summary PDF file, which lists the main take away points from the video lectures. This file is to help you with the assignments and also prepare for the final evaluation. Assignment 1 is available and the due date is currently set as Monday, Feb 12, 10 pm. This is one week after the start date of the course.

Week 2 deals with the properties of intrinsic or pure semiconductors. There is also a summary PDF file and Assignment 2, which is due on Monday, Feb 19, 10 pm. There is also optional reading material on 2D semiconductors, for those who are interested.

Please go through the material and let us know if there are any technical issues in accessing the content. Please also use the forum to post your questions and we will try and answer it. We will be regularly updating the course with each week's notes and assignments.

All the best.

Fundamentals of Electronic Materials and Devices: Happy New Year

Dear All,

Wishing everyone a happy and prosperous 2018 and hope you are looking forward to start of this MOOC. We are working on the course content and are planning to release the videos and assignments for the first two weeks by Jan 15. This will help you all to get a head start on the course, given that the official start date is Feb 5th.

This time we are planning to have summary PDF files for each week, which will be released along with the videos. The idea is to provide a snapshot of the main concepts from the videos, which can be used for revising the topics and will be useful during the assignments and exam. We will also try to add additional optional content for the various topics for those interested to explore further the topics covered in the lectures.

Hope you find the videos and notes useful and enjoyable. Please do use the forum to pose your questions and initiate discussions on the various topics. We have two TAs (Nitheesh and Vidyesh) who will be manning the forums and will answer your queries. Please also introduce yourselves in the forum.

All the best for the course and once again a Happy New Year.
