29 learners and 80 discussions - Will we get more "Learner Contributions"?
Dear All,
Over the past 10 days the number of learners contributing to the "Learner Contribution" forum has increased to 29 (from 11) and discussions have doubled to 80 (from 39).
It is a good time to recheck whether hypothesis of having 120 learners participating in forum or 240 questions or 500 questions is going to be valid based on this data. Anticipating this behaviour, the course team has decided to provide an alternate target for setting a separate assignment based on this forum. The revised target is:
- If the number of participants in the forum doubles in this week, OR
- If the number of discussions in the forum triples in this week.
While participating in the forum please do remeber that you have to review the first question and its feedback posted by your peer. Currently many are trying to just provide answer to the second question asked. Also, please do post questions related to weeks 4,5 and 6 too. This will be a good strategy to consolidate the learnings from the past few weeks.

100% more learner contributions in the past 3 days - Have you contributed?
Dear All,
Over the past three days of posting the last update, today we have seen exactly a 100% increase in the learner generated questions . i.e. there are a total of 22 questions posted by 11 people. The total number of discussions in the forum have increased to 39. We encourage you to keep posting in this forum, and as promised there will be one question based on this forum in the next week's assignment.
This is a kind request to all those who have already contributed questions, please also do review of the question posted by your peers. We are seeing that the review process is helping learners in understanding the misconceptions as well as revision of the content.
Sustaining the Momentum
The course team will keep this discussion activity open till end of the course.
Here is an interesting offer for all participants to motivate them in joining this discussion. If the learners continue to contribute in this forum by generating questions on the entire video contents of this course, the course team can think of keeping one graded assignment based purely on this discussion activity. However, there are certain conditions that you need to fulfill.
1. 120 different learners contribute questions in this discussion forum activity - "Learner Contributions", OR
2. Total number of unique questions reach 250, OR
3. Total number of discussions reach 500
Why these targets?
The rationale of selection of these numbers are based on the activeness of the course till now.
- The course has a total number of enrollments of 5,575 and in the first week 1205 (~ 22%) had submitted the assignments. Assuming 10% of people submitting assignments become active in this discussion forum, we are expecting close to 120 people to take part in the discussion. The target of total number of people is rounded to nearest 10 (Criterion 1).
- If 120 people participate, then the minimum expected questions are 240. Thus the total number of questions targeted is rounded up to nearest 50 (Criterion 2).
- Based on current posts to people ratio, we see that the ratio is close to 4:1. Thus if we are expecting 120 people to participate that should generate 480 discussions, and the number of discussions targeted is rounded up to nearest 100 (Criterion 3).
We will be regularly updating you with these numbers so that all of us will be aware of how close (or far) are we from the target.
Regards

A new discussion activity in Week 4 for learners
Dear Learners,
Along with the assignments, we have released a new activity to engage more learners in Week 4. Titled "Learner Contributions", this is a discussion activity that requires you to frame two questions based on any one of the video content in the course till now.
This activity is available as a main tab inside the course and the instructions for posting and discussion are also provided. A sample discussion has already been posted in this forum.
Technically, what you are doing in this forum is called "Peer Review" and this is an important part of the research process. Good academic research always requires the researcher to share their ideas with peers (both from same and different disciplines) and get/provide reviews at every possible point.
To further incentivize the participation in this forum, we are planning to keep one assignment question based on the discussions happening in this forum in Week 5 (or alternatively in Week 6 based on the total number of discussions that get posted).
We sincerely hope learners will make use of this opportunity to engage in discussions with each other.
Happy Discussions!!!
Regards
