    Earlier this year when Prof. Sandip and I were discussing about offering this course, I knew it would be a unique experience for me, but it has also turned out to be a very memorable one. Thanks to all of you for being so engaged and energetic! You make a platform such as NPTEL as successful as it is and the experience for us teachers very memorable.

I have also witnessed up close the dedication shown by the NPTEL team. What they do to spread knowledge is truly inspirational. Snigdha and Soumyajit have been fantastic TAs, responding to questions on the forum at such a brisk pace. I am also honored and thankful for having the opportunity to teach alongside someone as accomplished as Prof. Sandip. If I were to name one thing I learnt from all the people I worked with on this course, it is to pass on your knowledge to others as much as you can. I would ask the same from all of you, whenever an opportunity to share your knowledge presents itself.

Given the thousands of students taking this course, the only way I can keep this manageable is by drawing certain boundaries.

Please keep all communication to the forum. I will ignore any other attempt to get my attention. Also, please see to the extent possible, whether your question has been answered previously in the forum before posting.

If you post a question in the forum, you can expect an answer within 24 hours (its usually much less than that). If you don't get an answer, it can mean only 2 things:
1. I don't wish to answer your question.
2. I am dead.

If I am still answering others' questions in the forum, you can be rest assured that the reason I am not answering your question is not #2. There may be many reasons for not answering your question and one of them is definitely NOT because I don't want to help you. I sincerely do. So, if your question is unanswered after 24 hours, then go back review the lectures, check the announcements, look at similar posts in the forum, try other things -- if after doing this, if you have additional information that I should consider, do post again and I will check it. If you have done your due diligence, I will definitely answer your question.

Exam and Certificate Format : Blockchain Architecture Design and Use Cases

Dear Learners,

Type of exam: Computer based exam 

You will have to appear at the allotted exam centre and produce your Hall ticket and Government Photo Identification Card(Example: Driving License,Passport, PAN card, Voter ID, Aadhaar-ID with your Name, date of birth, photograph and signature) for verification and take the exam in person. You can find the allotted exam center details in the hall ticket.

The questions will be on the computer and the answers will have to be entered on the computer; type of questions may include multiple choice questions, fill in the blanks, essay type answers, etc

The hall ticket will be available for download tentatively around  17th October,2018 to 20th October, 2018. We will notify the same through email.

 FINAL CERTIFICATE:

The final score = 25% assignment score + 75% final certification exam score.

The final score will determine if you will/will not receive a certificate.

1. Final score < 40%: NO certificate

2. Final score between 40% -59%: Certificate of type "Successfully completing the course"

3. Final score between 60% -89%: Certificate with tag "Elite" printed at the top

4. Final score of 90% and above: Certificate with "Elite" tag and the gold medal printed on it.

Dear students,
    Many of you are using starter plan, which is great. But, I see a number of networks that have been created, but the dashboard for the network hasn't been opened even once nor any transaction performed there. If you intend to use your network, please open the dashboard and try out some of things I showed in the demos. 

We wish for this infrastructure to benefit as many students who are serious and interested in using this opportunity. So by Monday, if there are networks that have never been used, we will go ahead and delete them.

    I have sent out invites for getting access to IBM Blockchain Starter Plan to everyone who has signed up before 8.30pm IST today. Please accept the invite and follow the steps outlined in my earlier announcement to create your network. For some people, you may need to change the account on the top right of the dashboard once you login to blue mix, for you to be able to see the 'NPTEL-Blockchain' organization under the United Kingdom region.

All networks will be accessible until 31st of October, after which they will be deleted. Please backup any code you may develop as part of your network before then.

Access to IBM Blockchain Starter Plan

Dear students,
    It took a while, but we are finally ready to provide access to IBM Blockchain Starter Plan to the large number of registrants from this course. We have setup a dedicated cluster for you giving you free access to Starter Plan for the remainder of this course (till end of October). After this period, you will still be eligible to apply again and claim $500 free credits after the course is over through the standard offer, capacity permitting, if you haven't applied and been approved already. Any network you create now until October, will be irrecoverably destroyed after this course is over. You have to backup any code on your own and provision again on another instance of starter plan or externally. I sincerely thank the IBM team that made this possible, despite it never being a commitment earlier.


This solution of having a special cluster will also permit gmail addresses to be used, which was a problem previously when you applied directly.

I will shortly send out invites to all those who had filled out the google form we had provided - to the email addresses you provided there. You will be part of a special Bluemix organisation for which I am the owner. If you missed filling out that form, we will open it up again soon after this batch of people go through.

A sincere request: If you already have access to starter plan and were able to create a network, do not follow the process below so as to allow other students to gain access. Our capacity is limited and we would like as many students to benefit as possible.

Please follow the procedure below to setup your blockchain network using Starter Plan. We will post a How-To guide soon in the FAQ section, in case you hit difficulties. Please wait for the How-To guide before posting your problems on the forum, as I am sure that will resolve most issues.

Procedure:
1. For the e-mail address you provided in the google form, please ensure you have signed up for an IBM ID. You can do it easily by completing this form here: https://www.ibm.com/account/reg/us-en/signup?formid=urx-19776 and subsequently activating it.

2. You will soon receive an invite to join my newly created Bluemix organisation 'NPTEL-Blockchain'. Please follow the link in the mail and complete the form. After submitting, if you do not receive a confirmation, do not worry. The backend would have updated and approved your joining my new organisation. Proceed to the next steps.

3. Once you have accepted, go to https://console.bluemix.net and login with your IBMID and password. You will be taken to a dashboard.

4. Click on 'Create Resource' on the right and then find the 'Blockchain' tile and click on it.

5. In the next screen you will see details of the blockchain network that is going to be provisioned for you. Please change the name to 'Blockchain-<Your name>' so that the network has a unique identifier and will not be rejected due to conflicts. This will also allow me to track and view your network, in case you face problems and want me to help you with your network.

This screen should say 'United Kingdom' as the region (do not change this), 'NPTEL-Blockchain' as the organization and 'dev' as the space. Do not change these fields. Click on 'Create' at the bottom.

6. Your network should get provisioned. Click on 'Launch'. You'll be taken to your network. After this you should be able to follow my demo lectures 25 and 26 and also play around with your network / develop and deploy your blockchain apps.

    I wanted to thank all of you for the feedback through the forum and the weekly feedback forms. We do go through every one of them. However, in recent weeks we are getting fewer and fewer responses through weekly feedback. I would encourage all of you to take a couple of minutes to fill out the feedback forms each week. In such an online setting, that is the only kind of feedback we get and the only way for us to strive to improve the learning experience for you.

  2. If you have any system related problem, post them in specific online forums and not in the discussion forum for the course. It is impossible for us to understand what problem is happening at your end, so dig the internet.
  3. We have run and tested the installation scripts in Ubuntu 18.04. It might work in other operating systems as well but probably with many other configurations. It won't be possible for us to help for issues in any other platform.

Corrections to Assignment 7 Answers

Dear students,
    As many of you have rightly pointed out in the forum, there are two errors in the answers for assignment 7 questions. I deeply regret and apologise for this oversight. We have now corrected the answers and you should see your scores updated accordingly. If you still see a discrepancy, please let us know in the forum. The two corrections are as below. All other questions/answers are correct, and we will clarify any concerns in the forum.

Q5: 'Endorser' is not a valid permission level. The other 3 options are valid. The correct answer is 'b'. It was incorrectly marked as 'c' before, which has now been rectified.

Q8: Only operators have permission to vote on approving channel configuration changes. Writers or readers do not. In this scenario, only Comp2 is an operator. As a majority vote is needed from 1 existing operator, the minimum number of votes required should be 1.

So, the correct answer is 'b'. It was incorrectly marked as 'a' before, and has now been rectified.

IBM Blockchain Starter Plan Registration Issues

There have been a huge number of requests for starter plan due to this course. The backend team is working on increasing capacity and approving the free credits for the registrants from this course. Please use a non-gmail address when registering for starter plan (if you used a gmail address, please register again with a university or work e-mail). I do not know how long it will take for registrations to be approved, so please wait to get an e-mail approving your free credits.

In the meanwhile, please try lecture 27 that shows how you can setup Fabric on your own machine. With this you can do everything that you can do with starter plan.

Hello everyone,
    Many of you reported issues with registering for IBM Starter Plan and obtaining the free credits. I just learnt from the backend team that gmail and some other e-mail services are not being accepted currently due to some compliance issues -- they are working to support these as well. In the meanwhile, please try registering with your university or work e-mail instead of gmail.

Here is the much-awaited announcement on registering for the October 2018 certification exam. The registration for the certification exam is open only to students who have enrolled in the course.  If you want to register for the exam for this course, login here using the same email id used to enroll to the course.

Till the start date of the course, every Monday and Thursday at 5pm, we will sync the enrollment data on the exam form. If you enroll in between, please wait till the nearest Monday/Thursday to register for the exam. Once the enrollment is closed, the enrollment data will be completely loaded and you can register any time.

Dates of exam: October 28, 2018

HALL TICKET:
The hall ticket will be available for download tentatively in the Mid of October 2018. We will confirm the same through an announcement once it is published.

Final score on certificate: 25% of assignment score + 75% of certification exam score.
Award of certificate:  Hard and soft copy of Certificate will be awarded only to those candidates who register for the exam, attend the certificate examination and whose Final score >= 40%

The final score, assignment score and exam score will be printed on the certificate. The certificate will also have a link to the NPTEL website (http://nptel.ac.in/noc), where on logging in, your scores and e-certificate will be available for verification  (Appropriate announcements will be made). Please do regularly submit assignments to get a good final score.

IMPORTANT NOTES

1) FOR CANDIDATES WHO WOULD LIKE TO WRITE MORE THAN 1 COURSE EXAM:- you can add or delete courses and pay separately – till the date when the exam form closes. No changes will be entertained after that.   You can register for a maximum of 4 course exams ( 2 on Oct 7 and 2 on Oct 28. Same day of exam – you can write exams for 2 courses in the 2 sessions. Same center will be allocated for both the sessions).

2) FOR CANDIDATES WHO ARE PAYING VIA THE LOCAL CHAPTER OF YOUR COLLEGE:-

1. In the exam form, you will fill all the details and also upload photo, signature.
2. Ensure that you had selected your college name correctly from the drop-down list in the form.
3. Payment of exam fees - click on the tab - 'PAY VIA SPOC'.
The SPOC has to now confirm to NPTEL that he/she will pay fees on your behalf.
If the SPOC says NO, you will be intimated via email.
Then it becomes your responsibility to come back to the exam form and make the payment.
If you do not pay the exam fees within the prescribed time, you will not be able to write the exam.

Welcome to NPTEL Online Courses and Certification!

Thank you for signing up for our online course "Blockchain Architecture Design and Use Cases". We wish you an enjoyable and informative learning experience.

The course will begin on July 30,2018. When content is released on the portal, you will get an email alerting you. Please watch the lectures, follow the course regularly and submit all assessments and assignments before the due date. Your regular participation is vital for learning.

We will open registration for the exam soon after the course starts. A form has to be filled and the certification exam has a fee, which needs to be paid at the time of registration. Everyone who has signed-up for the course, including those who do not register for the exam, will continue to have access to the course contents.

There are two sections on the portal apart from the course content and assignment sections:
•    The announcement list which will only have messages from course instructors and teaching assistants - regarding the lessons, assignments, exam registration, hall tickets etc.
