Deep Learning: Week 1 Feedback

Dear learner

Thank you for enrolling to this NPTEL course and we hope you have gone through the contents for this week and also attempted the assignment.
We value your feedback and wish to know how you found the videos and the questions asked - whether they were easy, difficult, as per your expectations, etc
We shall use this to make the course better and we can also know from the feedback which concepts need more explanation, etc.

Please do spare some time to give your feedback - comprises just 5 questions - should not take more than a minute, but makes a lot of difference for us as we know what the learners feel.

Thank you.
- NPTEL team

Error in the slides of Week 2

Hello Learners,

There are a few errors in the lecture video of Week 2 : Representation Power of Multilayer Network of Sigmoid Neurons.

  1.  Please note that the logistic function shown at the timestamp 9:45 is incorrect. There should be a "+" sign between 1 and exp term in the denominator instead of a "-" sign.
  2. On plotting the logistic function as defined above, you can observe that increasing the bias shifts the curve to the left as opposed to the one shown in the lecture video which shifts to the right.
We have made the necessary changes in the slides which can be accessed here or you can find them in the Lecture Material for Week 2 under the course outline tab.
Sorry for the confusion caused.

DEEP LEARNING : COMMON DOUBTS ANSWERED

Dear Learners,

We hope that by now you all are comfortable with the portal and also familiar with how the course will proceed.
Based on the questions asked on forum, we have few announcements to make. Please read them carefully.

1) Video release
Please have patience. The course officially starts on July 30th '18. The videos (along with each week's assignment) will be released every week starting from July 30th.
We have released Week 1's videos to get you familiar with the course.

2) Videos Ending Abruptly
Yes, the videos are complete. The ending may seem abrupt in some cases because we had to break down the videos into modules. However, if you see the next video you will find that it starts from where the previous video ends.

3) Pre-requisites
Yes, the course will indeed involve some mathematical details. You would find the math to be a bit manageable if you have done the following online courses:
    - Probability

4) Coding assignments
    - The official assignments would require minimal coding
    - But, as mentioned in other threads, we will have unofficial programming assignments where you can learn to implement and experiment with  concepts that you have learnt in class. We will not be able to evaluate these assignments.
    - We will not be teaching python, tensorflow, pytorch, etc

5) Why the emphasis on Maths?
    - We would like to give the following analogy: You can learn to drive a car without knowing anything about the internals of the car (the mathematical details in our case) but what would happen if one fine day your car breaks down on the highway. Will you be able to repair it without knowing these internal details of the car? Well, fortunately, cars don't break down very often and hence we get by without knowing the internal details. Unfortunately, once you become ML/DL practitioners you will realize that these techniques may not work out of the box when applied to a new problem or new domain. At such a time (when things breakdown) knowing the internals will help you sail through and give you an edge over other practitioners in the field.
    - Having a good grip on fundamentals is very important in any field, be it sports, music, arts, academia or just about any other area.

6) Changes in the slides
There are few common questions/doubts which were repeatedly asked in the forum.
Kindly read the following threads:
Thread 1 : Is that theta or zero?
Thread 2 : How to calculate errors?

7) GANs, RBMs, VAEs
Those topics are not a part of this NPTEL course as it is difficult to cover all that in 30 hours. However, we will release those videos on the same youtube channel towards the end of the course (or maybe even a bit earlier than that). Based on the feedback for this course, we might offer that (RBMs, GANs, VAEs, Autoregressive models) as a separate short course. In any case, we will make the videos available.

Hope this helps you all.
