AI:KRR - Re-evaluation of Week 7 Assignment

Dear Students,
Q12 in Week-7 has been re-evaluated. Please check your progress tab for any score change.

Explanation

Q12. What can one say about the two input clauses in SLD resolution step with Horn clauses?

By definition, SLD resolution is a restricted form of resolution where each new clause introduced is a resolvent of the previous clause and a clause from the original set.

If S is a set of Horn clauses and S derives a negative clause c, then it is guaranteed that  there exists a SLD derivation where each new clause derived is negative. This does not rule out the possibility of other valid derivations. For example, one could get a SLD derivation where a resolvent is positive.

For example, consider the following SLD derivation of a null clause. The clauses in red form the input set and are Horn clauses.

(A ¬B)  with (B  ¬C )
-->
(A ¬C)
          with (C ¬D)
--> (A ¬D)
          with D
--> A
  with  ¬A
Null

This derivation always uses the resolvent as one parent and a red clause as the other. In this context, the following can be concluded.
  • Both can be positive definite clauses. True
  • One must be a positive definite clause and the other must be a negative clause. False (follows from above)
  • One must be a positive definite clause and the other can be anything. True for resolution always. (cannot resolve two negative clauses)
  • Both can be negative clauses. False
  • It is not possible that both are positive. False (follows from first option)
  • It is not possible that both are negative. True
Thus for Q12, correct options are (a),(c) and (f).

However, if the question had said that the given set of Horn clauses form a Prolog program and backward chaining is used for derivation, then it becomes a special case where all input clauses are positive definite clauses and the goal is a negative clause. Hence, backward chaining in Prolog will follow SLD derivation where each resolvent is negative (this is discussed in lecture). In that case, options (b), (e) and (f) would be correct.

Devi

AI:KRR - tips to get the most out of the course

Dear Student,

Our journey has begun. The first set of videos and the first weekly assignment has been uploaded. Welcome aboard AI: Knowledge Representation and Reasoning.

Here is our view of how to navigate this course to get the most out of it.

The course spans 12 weeks, with 2 to 3 hours of video every week, and a weekly assessment. It is very important to keep pace with the course, even when some students may feel that the initial part on Propositional Logic is rudimentary. We recommend the following.

1. Do spend the time at your convenience to watch the videos carefully.
2. Do interact on the Forum if you have doubts, and queries about the assessments. We will try and address those queries as early as possible. Where needed we will upload some additional solved problems to help understand the concepts better.

Once you are done with the 12 weeks, you are almost through. Even though the final exam carries 75% weight for the certificate, it is simply a final check done in examination conditions where you get 3 hours to do the paper. The paper will be similar to the weekly assessments. If you have done the weekly assessments successfully, or gone over the published solutions carefully, you will find that the final exam is a simpler version of the problems you did over the 12 weeks.

The key to doing well, then, is to do the 12 weeks diligently. Having done that you should sail through the final exam with flying colours.

Happy learning!

Deepak Khemani

Welcome to AI: Knowledge Representation & Reasoning (AI:KRR)

Dear Student,

An integral part of an intelligent agent is the ability to reason about the environment the agent is operating in. The is necessary if the agent is to make sense of the world, plan for its goals and execute those plans.

Reasoning in computing, like everything else we do inside a machine, has to be with explicit representations. We refer to the task of creating these representations as knowledge representation, and the resulting structures as the knowledge base (KB). The KB encapsulates what the agent knows.

The algorithms for reasoning essentially manipulate the KB. By reasoning we often mean, making inferences from the KB, computing what else does an agent know, given the KB. In this course we will focus on a kind of reasoning known as deduction. Deduction involves making sound inferences, generating conclusions that are necessarily true. We investigate a variety of logic based languages of varying richness and complexity of reasoning.

We have introduced an Assessment 0, for you to get a feel of the kind of topics we will deal with. Do try these exercises now. The answers can be checked after you enter them. The assessment does not carry any weight in the final evaluation.

Welcome to the AI:KRR course! We hope you will enjoy the learning process and benefit from it.

With best wishes!

Deepak Khemani (instructor)
Shikha Singh (teaching assistant)
