Fundamentals of Electronic Materials and Devices - week 6 lessons online
Dear All,
Lessons from week 6 are now available online.
In this week we will study transistors which are examples of 3 terminal 2 junction devices. Transistors have primarily two main functions, one to act as an amplifier and the other to act as a switch. We will look at a overview of different types of transistors and focus specifically on the field effect transistor, especially the metal oxide semiconductor configuration, i.e. the MOSFET. The MOSFET forms the basis of integrated circuits since they can be used to perform various logical and arithmetic operations.
In the last 2 weeks, we will study optoelectronic devices, those that depend on the interaction between semiconductor and light radiation.

Week 4 lessons
Dear All,
Lessons from week 4 are now available online. This starts the electronic devices part of the course.
To understand the working of electronic devices we need to understand the properties of the interface. We will first start with metal-metal junctions and use that to explain the concepts of Fermi level alignment. These junctions are used in thermocouples. We will then investigate metal-semiconductor junctions, which are of two types Ohmic and Schottky junctions. Finally, this week we will start studying the junction between a p- and n-type semiconductor, called a pn junction or a diode.
The lessons on pn junctions will continue on to week 5 where we will consider the effect of an applied voltage on the behavior of a pn junction.
Also, a reminder that week 1 assignment is due today (Feb 6) by 10 pm. The solutions will be posted on Tuesday (Feb 7).

Week 3 lessons
Dear All,
Lessons from week 3 are now available online.
In week 2 looked at intrinsic semiconductors. In this week (week 3) we will look at the effect of doping these intrinsic semiconductors to form extrinsic semiconductors. These can be either n-type or p-type or compensation doping. We will study the effect of doping on carrier concentration, Fermi level position, and electrical conductivity. At the end of the week, we will also look briefly at degenerate and amorphous semiconductors. Doped semiconductors are used extensively in electronic devices and hence week 3 lessons will form the basis for the second part of the course.
Weeks 1, 2, and 3 formed the electronic materials part of the course. Starting from week 4 we will focus on devices. The assessment for week 3 will be uploaded later.

Week 2 lesson on 2D semiconductors
In
this online course we focus on traditional bulk semiconductors.
Recently there has been a lot of work on synthesizing and studying two
dimensional (2D) forms of these semiconductors and other materials,
which are not traditionally semiconductors. These are called 2D semiconductors and graphene,
which is the 2D form of graphite is the most common example. These are
semiconductors which are a single atomic layer thick and have a large 2D
area, with respect to the thickness, and hence some interesting
electronic properties. Researchers are looking at a variety of other
materials like silicene (2D form of silicon), germanene (2D Germanium),
stanene (2D form of tin), phosphorene (2D form of phosphorous) and so
on.
For those who are interested to know more about these
materials and their properties I have created a new lesson on week 2 in which an article from Nature magazine on these materials is attached. This is only an optional reading lesson and you will not be tested on this in the assessments or exam.
Week 2 lessons
Dear All,
Today, Jan 23, is the official start date for the course. Week 1 lessons and assessment are already available online. Today I am releasing the videos and lectures notes for Week 2 lessons.
In week 2 we will be doing a worked assignment from the material discussed in week 1. This is to help you gain some experience with doing numerical problems in this area. Then we will be discussing intrinsic or pure semiconductors for the rest of the week. The assessment for week 2 will be made available later this week.

Welcome message from Course Instructor
Dear All,
Welcome to this installment of the course on the Fundamentals of electronic materials and devices. This is the second time I am offering this course in MOOC format. Last year we had around 500 students who took the final certification exam. Hoping this year as well we get an active participation from all of you. The official start date for the course is January 23 but I shall release the video lectures for the first week on Jan 15 so that all of you have that extra week to go through the lectures. The assignment will be made available after Jan 23. Along with the lectures I have also prepared course notes for the individual lectures in PDF format. These will also be made available to you along with the videos and you can you these to refresh your understanding of the videos and as a source for ready reference. I shall also be adding supplementary reading material along with the course videos and notes. These are not for grading but will be useful for those interested to know in detail about specific aspects of the field.
You
can find the weekly course plan and also details on the assignments and
grading in the opening page. Exam dates are also mentioned there. There will be 7 assignments and we will consider the best 5, for 50 % of the total marks. The remaining 50 % marks will come from the final exam. I shall be posting last year's question paper as well for you to practice. This will be later in the course. There are two TAs assigned for this course. They will help monitor the forum and answer questions regarding the course material. I will also help them with that. You can also reach me through email, if you have specific questions about the course material and also related topics.
Please use the forum to introduce yourselves. We had a couple of students do that already. This is so that we also know your backgrounds and can plan the course accordingly.
All the best
and hopefully you gain something positive at the completion of this course.
