NPTEL: Introduction to Data Analytics - Issues resolved
Dear Participant,
As we mentioned in the earlier email that there was some issue with Assignment_5. We also asked the students if they had any other issue with the marking. We have following points to be shared with you:
1) Assignment 5: Q11- The correct option is changed from "c" to "b" and assignment is reevaluated.
2) Since we also received some emails saying marks imbalance issue with Assignment_1 for Q9. We have already given +5 marks to all the students to accommodate any potential error with the assignment marking.
3) As we have finalized the results, now we can go ahead with publishing the e-certificates. The process may take around 3 working days.
4) Once we publish all the e-certificates, we will start dispatching the hard copy certificates.

NPTEL: Introduction to Data Analytics: What after IDA?
Dear Participant,
We are glad that you joined the course and we hope that you had a very good learning experience.
Congrats to all the people who have cleared the course, but there is a long way to go. So keep learning.
People who could not qualify, don't worry. This exam is not the only parameter to test your capabilities. Learn from your mistakes and improve on them. Failure is not forever, you just have to keep trying, better and better every time. :)
All the participants in the course were very cooperative. We had really interesting discussions on the forum. For answering your queries I revisited many topics and learned a lot. So I am thankful to you for that. We all should be thankful to the NPTEL team, which is working on the back-end. There is a small team, handling a very large number of courses. For any problem, any one of us used to ping them anytime of the day or night. Their prompt response has helped a lot.
Many people on the forum have asked about what to do after the course- Introduction to Data Analytics?
I will try to answer this. :P
Since the field of Data Analytics is very vast and you have done only an introductory course, so there is a lot more to explore. Whatever topics you have studied in the course, each topic is a course in itself and it leads to a lot of opportunities in research and industry. So I will suggest you the following paths:
1) If you are a student/employee/... and will be at the same place for next year also:
Then you should definitely take benefit from other online courses as well. In every session, NPTEL offers many courses in this domain - Introduction to Machine Learning, Introduction to Reinforcement Learning, AI: Search methods for problem solving, Social Networks etc.
These courses will give you in-depth knowledge of a particular area that you can apply in your organization and will help the students with better placements :)
You should also keep participating in the online competitions such as Kaggle, keep reading blogs such as KDnuggets. This will enhance your problem-solving skills.
2) If you are a final year student:
If you follow (1), it will help you to get placed in better (or best) companies across the world. But there are a lot more opportunities if you plan to study further (Masters, PhD, Postdoc). There are many good institutions in India (IITs, IISc) and outside which are doing excellent work in the same area. By studying in these institutions your chances of joining better research labs or research organizations increase.
3) If you want to explore more before going deeper <or> if you are not able to find the right job for you:
Many IITs and IISc invite applications for the project positions in their labs. You should keep checking their lab web pages for the updates. I see many students complaining that they don't get the response when they write emails for internship/project. The probability of getting a reply is directly proportional to the seriousness/sensibility of your email. Recently I came to know that someone wrote to the IISc director asking about procedure to apply for the winter internship and he was thinking that why the director is not replying. You should write to the appropriate person from the lab (Prof/PhD/Masters). Your application must have your CV, what skills do you have in common with the lab etc.
I also encourage you to participate in the ML related events happening in the country. There are many active bodies (like IKDD) in the similar area. For the updates, you have to check the department/lab/prof webpages of IITs/IISc. Recently I met one of our course participant at an event in IISc. I hope that many of us will keep meeting.
Of course, all these views are my personal views. They may contradict with your opinions. Once again I thank all of you. Have a great learning.

NPTEL: Introduction to Data Analytics- Few announcements
Dear Participant,
All the weekly assignments for the course are over. There are the following two corrections in the final solution posted.
1) Q9 of assignment 1
Since we didn't put any restriction on the sign of data items. So if all the numbers are negative, then doubling the largest number (which is also a negative number) will reduce the mean. We didn't include this in any of the options. Option (b) was supposed to cover this possibility. So we will not consider this question and final evaluation will be done from the rest of the 9 questions.
2) Q12 of assignment 5
Since the given data has 3 classes, so we have to sum number the support vectors for the classifiers of all classes. So its solution should be (b) not (c). You can follow the explanation given on the following link.

So your marks will be changed accordingly.
There are few points I want to make:
1) If there is any issue related to your marks calculations, then kindly cross check before posting. We have received many requests claiming that the marks calculation is wrong. All the requests are resolved and till now there was no error in marks calculation. The software used to calculate marks is not likely to make an error while adding numbers.
2) I have already shared a set of sample questions. The questions in the final exam will be of similar level (not of the similar type or similar formula/statement). If you are not able to solve these questions, then you need to go through the concept again. Looking for a step by step solution will not give you proper training and you might overfit on the training data (sample questions in this case).
3) Make sure you read the similar questions on the forum before asking your doubt. There are cases, where the same question has been asked 10 times. It pollutes the forum and users (including me) waste time in reading the same questions.

I am writing this email to answer some common questions being asked on the forum:
1) Duration of the exam: 3 hours
2) Number of questions: 60. In the last lecture, the Prof. says that number of questions are 40, but it is 60.
3) Type of questions: Only MCQs. There can be 1 mark and 2 mark MCQs. For some questions, there may be more than one option correct.
4) Level of questions: If you have gone through all the lecture videos and did all the assignments by your own, then it won't look difficult at all.
5) Use of calculator: Allowed
6) Use of WEKA, Excel, R, Python etc. : You won't need it
7) Things to bring: Hall ticket and a valid ID proof. The ID proof must have your photo and signature.
8) Use of Z table, T table.... : Allowed. We will provide you whatever is required.
9) Have some other question: Sure, post it on the forum!

Type of exam: Computer based exam (Online)
Online:

will have to appear at the allotted exam centre and produce your Hall
ticket and Government Photo Identification Card(Example: Driving

birth, photograph and signature) for verification and take the exam in
person. You can find the allotted exam center details in the hall
ticket.
The questions will be on the computer and the answers
will have to be entered on the computer; type of questions may include
multiple choice questions, fill in the blanks, essay type answers, etc
The hall ticket will be available for download tentatively around 10 -16th September 2017. We will notify the same through email.
FINAL CERTIFICATE:
The final score = 25% assignment score + 75% final certification exam score.
The final score will determine if you will/will not receive a certificate.
1. Final score < 40%: NO certificate
2. Final score between 40% -59%: Certificate of type "Successfully completing the course"
3. Final score between 60% -89%: Certificate with tag "Elite" printed at the top
4. Final score of 90% and above: Certificate with "Elite" tag and the gold medal printed on it.

Registration is open from 2nd AUGUST 2017 (Wednesday) until 23rd AUGUST 2017 10:00 AM (Wednesday).

sessions).
Exam Session time: Shift 1 - 9.00 AM -12.00 PM ; Shift 2 - 2.00 PM - 5.00 PM

The final score,
assignment score and exam score will be printed on the certificate. The
certificate will also have a link to the NPTEL website (http://nptel.ac.in/noc),
where on logging in, your scores and e-certificate will be available
for verification (Appropriate announcements will be made). Please do
regularly submit assignments to get a good final score.
IMPORTANT NOTES
1) FOR CANDIDATES WHO WOULD LIKE TO WRITE MORE THAN 1 COURSE EXAM:-
Once the registration form is submitted after payment, no changes like
adding or removing the chosen course, exam shift, city is possible. So,
if you are choosing to write 2 course exams, please choose suitably and make
the payment for both courses at the same time. It is not possible to
pay later for the second course. Once the payment is made, only basic
details will be editable.
2) FOR CANDIDATES WHO ARE PAYING VIA THE LOCAL CHAPTER OF YOUR COLLEGE:-
There are 2 modes of operation:
Option 1
1. You will pay fees to your SPOC.
2. Your SPOC will pay the fees to NPTEL on your behalf and also will provide us all details including photo, signature.
3. We will populate all the fields in the exam form.
4. Your responsibility will be to come to the exam form and verify that the details in the exam form are correct.
Option 2
1. In the exam form, you will fill all the details and also upload photo, signature.
2. Ensure that you had selected your college name correctly from the drop-down list in the form.
3. Payment of exam fees - click on the tab - 'PAY VIA SPOC'.
The SPOC has to now confirm to NPTEL that he/she will pay fees on your behalf.
If the SPOC says NO, you will be intimated via email.
Then it becomes your responsibility to come back to the exam form and make the payment.
If you do not pay the exam fees within the prescribed time, you will not be able to write the exam.
After submitting the form, in case you wish to change the name, date of birth, address, photo and signature. Please login to http://nptelonlinecourses.iitm.ac.in/edit_details.php and make the changes till August 23, 2017.
The
following data initially submitted cannot be changed –email id, course

Welcome to NPTEL Online Courses and Certification!
Thank you for signing up for our online course "Introduction to Data Analytics". We wish you an enjoyable and informative learning experience.
The course will begin on July 24, 2017.
When content is released on the portal, you will get an email alerting
you. Please watch the lectures, follow the course regularly and submit
all assessments and assignments before the due date. Your regular
participation is vital for learning.
We will open registration
for the exam soon after the course starts. A form has to be filled and
the certification exam has a fee, which needs to be paid at the time of
registration. Everyone who has signed-up for the course, including those
who do not register for the exam, will continue to have access to the
course contents.
There are two sections on the portal apart from the course content and assignment sections:
- The announcement list which will only have messages from course instructors and teaching assistants - regarding the lessons, assignments, exam registration, hall tickets etc.
- The discussion forum which is for everyone to ask questions and interact - If you have any questions regarding the technical content in the lectures, any doubts in the assignments or any question related to the exam, registration, hall tickets, results, etc, kindly write about this in the forum and the course instructor/TA will respond to it. Please use this well and participate to benefit from the course.
