Final words and Final exam pattern

Hello all,

As the course is almost coming to an end and the final exam is only a few days away, I would like to summarise everything we’ve learnt from this course. In the first week we discussed the Newton’s laws of motion, the concept of equilibrium and applied them to rigid body systems. In the second week, we discussed structures and the forces in structural members. In the third week, we introduced the idea of bending moment and shear force distributions. In the fourth week, we learnt about friction and its applications to various engineering systems. In the fifth week, we moved on to kinematics of particles as well as rigid body systems. Then, in the sixth week, we introduced the concepts of dynamics and applied them to various rigid body systems. In the seventh week, we learnt the impulse-momentum approach of solving rigid body dynamics problems. Finally, in the eighth week, we looked at a different way of solving dynamics problems i.e., work energy approach.

You will find that these concepts can be extended to studying more complex engineering systems in the advanced courses in mechanical engineering like Kinematics and dynamics of machinary, Strength of materials, Design of machine members etc.

Regarding the final examination, we will be conducting the exam for 100 marks which will amount to 75% of your total score. The assignments you have attempted will contribute 25% to your total score. Best SIX assignment scores of the total TEN assignments will be considered for the final scores. The final exam will have 3 sections. The first one will contain 17 Multiple Choice questions (MCQ) each for 1 mark. These questions will test your conceptual knowledge. The second section will contain 21 questions each for 3 marks. These are either MCQ or numerical answer type questions. The questions will be similar in standard to the questions asked in the assignments. The third section will contain 5 questions each for 4 marks. The questions in this section are all MCQ type questions. These questions will also be based of the assignment questions.

Since assignment questions carry a lot of weightage in the examination, I would strongly urge you to go through all the assignments and check out the solutions which have been uploaded. Go through the course material including videos and notes if you need clarity on any concept. Please feel free to make use of the forum to clarify any doubts of yours. We will try to answer them as soon as possible.

It has been a delight to have you onboard this exciting journey through Engineering Mechanics. Hope you enjoyed it as much as we did.

Best wishes and good luck,

Prof. Mahesh Panchagnula and the TA team

Queries regarding assignment marks

Hello everyone.

There have been a lot of queries regarding assignment marks posted on the forum. To clear things, We will be considering only the best 6 assignment scores out of all the assignments you have attempted. There were a few errors in assignment 2 which are currently being rectified by the technical team. These corrections will be done in a couple of days. Please don't worry about your assignment 2 scores in the meanwhile. Also assignment 5 had a problem that many of you had included the units in the answers.

Considering all these and also requests from people who've missed the deadlines of a few assignments, we have put up 2 additional assignments. Those of you who have missed assignments or have performed badly in any assignments can use this opportunity to improve your score. So, we will now be considering the best 6 scores out of all the 10 assignments.

Best wishes and Good luck!

Announcement regarding Assignments

Hello everyone,

Hope you are enjoying the course! This announcement has some important details regarding assignments. Solutions to assignment 7 have been uploaded. You can download it from the solutions tab. Some of the questions in Assignment 8 have been changed. For those who have attempted it already, Please take up the quiz again. Apart from the 8 assignments, we have uploaded two more assignments - 9 and 10. Only best 6 out of 10 assignment scores will be considered for final grading. Due date for assignment 8,9,10 will be the Wednesday of next week. Please allot yourselves some extra time to attempt these assignments.

Best wishes and Good luck!

Week 7 content available!

Hello everyone,

Hope you are enjoying the lectures and assignments. We are entering week 7,the penultimate week of this course. This week we introduce the concept of Impulse and momentum which can be used to solve a larger class of engineering problems involving particle-particle / rigid body - rigid body interactions. We also look at a special point called the center of percussion and it's importance. Please go through all the lectures before attempting the assignment. We strongly recommend you to use the forum for any technical and course related queries.

Best wishes and Good luck!

Announcement

We have been receiving lots of queries regarding the grading for assignment 5. The reason behind a lot of people scoring less than expected is because of a small technical glitch in the back-end (the automatic grading system was not designed to recognize units). Sorry for any inconvenience caused. We are working on this issue and will update the scores as soon as possible. Assignment for week 6 is now available. Please watch all the lectures in week 6 before attempting the assignment.

Week 5 content is now available

Hello Everyone,

We are now entering one the most important aspects of mechanics i.e., Dynamics. In the following modules, we will be looking at particle systems, rigid bodies and rigid body systems. We will introduce concepts of kinematics and dynamics using simple examples. These concepts can be extended to complex systems as well. This week will be dealing with kinematics of particle systems. This will help understand concepts in kinematics like relative motion, rotation etc. Please go through the lectures and try the examples discussed in lectures by yourself. Assignment 5 is also uploaded, please try out the assignment once you are done with the lectures. Also assignment can be submitted any number of times. Only the last submission will be considered for grading. Please take the assignments seriously, they weigh 25% in your final score. Anyway only best 6 out of 8 assignment scores will be taken for this.

The deadline for Assignment 4 is 21-2-17 i.e., Tuesday 23:59 PM. Please make sure you submit your assignment 4 by then.

Also, In the "Computational Examples" section, we will be uploading very interesting examples which are solved using MATLAB. We are trying this kind of thing for the first time. It is not compulsory for anyone to follow it. It is just to motivate people to start appreciating complicated problems which demand the use of computers to solve them. Please look at the examples we uploaded. If you want to look at the MATLAB codes we have written, please follow the instructions in the "Computational Examples" section and create MATLAB Online account and await further instructions for accessing the codes we have written. Even if you have no experience or interest in programming, please go through the examples uploaded, they are pretty interesting.

Best wishes and Good luck!

Teaching Assistance for the course

Hello all,

My name is Mahesh Panchagnula. I am course instructor, as you can see. Prof. Sivakumar and I will be teaching this video course on Engg. Mechanics - Statics and Dynamics. I will be helped by Mr. Srikanth Sarma and Mr. Sharan Raja as the Teaching Assistants for this course. They are both undergraduate students at IIT Madras and have taken this as well as other advanced courses in Mechanical Engg.

Please feel free to post your questions on the forum. They will try to answer them as soon as possible (usually within 24 hrs.) I will also be contributing to the forum from time to time. Please keep an eye on the forum.

The forum is not only intended for interactions with us here at IIT. Please use it for interaction among yourselves also. If you feel you can answer a fellow student's question, please do so. If something requires modification, we will step in and correct.

We look forward to many weeks of productive online time spent together.

Best wishes and good luck,
