Clarification regarding: certification scoring and grading
Dear course participants,We have been getting the following queries (given below) regarding certification scoring and grading. We wish to clarify that the NPTEL’s notification for all the courses was posted in the home page of NIeCer101: Health Research Fundamentals. However, our course follows the following for certification:1. Final score less than 50 fail
2. Final score between 50-69 completed successfully
3. Final score between 70-89 Elite
4. Final score of 90 and above Elite+Gold
We wish to clarify that NPTEL’s notification was meant for all the other courses. We are sorry that this has led to some confusion.Hence, certification for Health Research Fundamentals is based on the above and NOT based on NPTEL’s criteria for all the other courses.
We hope now we have clarified the issues.

Week 8 Assignments Due Date – 20th September 2017 (Wednesday)
Clarification regarding answer to Question 2 from Assignment 19
Dear All,
We wish to clarify the following Question 2 of Assignment 19
Which of the following is not true regarding issues related to informed consent?(a) Informed consent benefits both the participants and investigators
A. Audio-Visual Recording of Informed Consent Process shall only be mandatory for cases where vulnerable population is involved & the trial is of New Chemical Entity or New Molecular Entity.
B. For clinical trials of Anti-HIV and anti-Leprosy drugs, only audio recording of the informed consent process shall be mandatory.
In case of conditions, where there is stigma and sensitivities involved, protecting the privacy of the participants becomes critically important.
However, it is also important to understand that this recommendation has been brought in to ensure that the consent process has been done in a fair manner and with full understanding by the participant. It also documents that there is no coercion or force or pressure or incentive used by the investigators to influence study participation.
Also, in practice, while recording AV consent of the participant, if the participant desires not to reveal the identity, the camera can be set in such a way that the identity of the person is masked or facial features made hazy on the video recording, but the voice can be authenticated if necessary by the regulatory authorities.
However, we will assign 1 mark to all of those who submitted assignment 19. This 1 mark will NOT be added to those who've scored (10/10) 100% in this assignment.
Please remember that this addition will NOT be seen in your current score when you click and check under the tab 'Progress'. However, we assure you that these marks will be added to the final score for calculation for award of certificates for those who are appearing for exams.

Clarification regarding answer to Question 10 from Assignment 4
We wish to clarify the following Question 10 from Assignment 4;
Measurement of disease frequency which measure the rapidity with which new cases occur in a population?
a. Incidence rate and prevalence
b. Cumulative incidence and incidence rate
c. Cumulative incidence and prevalence
d. Incidence rate and mortality rate
- As per the lecture presentation, the response "B" seems correct. Hence, we will provide 1 mark to everyone for Q 10 from Assignment 4
- For educational purpose, we wish to clarify the following:
- In epidemiology 'case' refers to health-related 'event of interest'. [For instance, case of diarrhea refers to "occurrence of passing of loose stools (an event) in a resident of a particular place during a particular time"]. The event includes deaths as well.
- Incidence refers to occurrence of 'new' health-related event in a defined within a specified period of time. It may be measured as (1) Risk or (2) Rate.
- The "risk" (measured as Cumulative Incidence) refers to "risk" of developing disease/infection during over a specified period of time. It is often used to predict risk of an individual developing the disease /infection over time]
- The "rate" (measured as Incidence Rate) refers to instantaneous potential for change in disease status per unit time relative to the size of the disease/infection free population. Therefore, rate (so also mortality rate) describes how rapidly a health-related event (disease/infection/death) occurs in a population of interest.
- Hence, in the above Question 10, option "D" will be more accurate/specific answer. However, option "B" (Cumulative Incidence and Incidence Rate) is broadly ok considering points made in lecture presentation.
