Exam, Grading and MATLAB Online

We are aware of the issues  you faced while attempting the last question (coding) in the exam. Please see my forum post from last night (Sunday night):
https://onlinecourses.nptel.ac.in/noc17_ge02/forum?place=msg%2Fnoc17-ge02-discuss%2F71Ky2mqeF60%2FME4erBljAQAJ

[...] the problem will be graded by hand. There are partial marks for various steps.

I have made a note of the various queries you have raised on this problem. I will look into the individual solutions, discuss with the NPTEL team, and we will then take a call appropriately.
Yes, we are aware that this problem was due to the apostrophe. We will address this in a fair manner once we are able to look at all the solutions.

It typically takes a couple of weeks for the process of grading. Thereafter, cross-checking, verification and upload may take another week. However, due to the special circumstances with the last problem, I request your patience for a little bit longer.

I understand you may be anxious to know the results soon; but we need time to do due diligence for a course with several hundred exam takers.

Finally, a note for those who used MATLAB Online. The licence was for the duration of this course. We are in grace period of the licence. Thereafter, you will not have access your codes. So, please download and backup your codes. Instructions for doing so are given at the following link:
https://onlinecourses.nptel.ac.in/noc17_ge02/unit?unit=82&lesson=84

Hope you had a good time learning MATLAB in this course. We will be around on the forum to answer any further questions.

With warm regards
Niket Kaisare

Assignment 5 deadline extended until Friday 11 pm

There seems to be a DNS issues with some of the internet service providers (ISPs). The NPTEL team is trying to resolve this issue.

Therefore, the deadline for this assignment is extended to Friday (3rd March) at 11 pm.

The deadline extension is due to network issues. Hence, me or the TAs will not respond to any technical queries on Assignment 5 from now until Friday night.

Best
Niket Kaisare

Assignment 5 deadline extended until tomorrow (02 March) morning 11 am

It seems some of you had problems accessing the course website. When I tried to do so from airport today, I also got an error.

It was probably not an error at our end.

Nonetheless, some of you were unable to submit the assignment a couple of hours ago. Hence, we have extended the deadline by about 12 hours. Please submit the assignment positively before 11 am tomorrow morning (tomorrow = Thursday, 2nd March).

Welcome to Day-1 of the course

Welcome!

Today (23rd January) is officially the first day of this course. Almost 1500 students have enrolled since my last announcement. So, here is an announcement summarising what we have so far on the course website.
(This info is a repetition for those who enrolled earlier.)

The videos for the first module are uploaded on the course website:
https://onlinecourses.nptel.ac.in/noc17_ge02/unit?unit=10

The videos for the second module have also been uploaded ahead of time on the course website:
https://onlinecourses.nptel.ac.in/noc17_ge02/unit?unit=19

In fact, we had uploaded the videos for first two modules last week itself, so as to help participants ramp up their learning at their own pace.

The first assignment is also uploaded:
https://onlinecourses.nptel.ac.in/noc17_ge02/unit?unit=10&assessment=12
The first assignment will not be graded (and it does not have a deadline).
Assignments 2 to 8 will be graded; best 5 (of these 7) will count towards 25% of the course grade.

We expect you to use MATLAB to solve these assignment problems and submit the answers online. A help video for this has been provided in the "Course Overview... and Help Videos" section. The link for the video on how to submit the assignments is:
https://onlinecourses.nptel.ac.in/noc17_ge02/unit?unit=1&lesson=94

Courtesy of Mathworks, access to MATLAB Online is provided for the course participants for the duration of this course. Information for obtaining access to MATLAB Online is also provided in the "Course Overview... and Help Videos" section.

The course also has a discussion forum for students/participants to discuss technical questions related to the course material. Several students have already started using the forum. Myself and three TAs (teaching assistants) for this course are participating in this forum to answer your questions as best as we can.

Assignment for Module-2 will be uploaded next Monday (i.e., Jan 30th).

Wishing you all the best for this course. I hope you will enjoy learning MATLAB through this course.
With best regards
Niket Kaisare

New Help Videos Uploaded

Dear students

Based on our experience running this course last year, there were a few points that students had questions. In anticipation of similar issues this year as well, we have created a few help videos:

(i) How to get MATLAB Online access (mentioned in previous announcement)
(ii) How to submit assignments (where I solve first problem of Assignment-1)
(iii) How to use MATLAB Online (same problem is solved using MATLAB Online)

Please use these videos, if required. If you still have questions, please post them on the discussion forum.

Happy coding!
Niket Kaisare

Course Videos for Download

Good Morning everyone.

Videos that will be used on the course website will be from YouTube. Some of the colleges do not have YouTube access on campus. Some others may find the internet speed too slow.

We have therefore uploaded all the videos on the NPTEL archive site:

This is an eight-week course. Two weeks of material has been uploaded on the course website. Thereafter, each week's material will be uploaded on each Monday. Most of the course participants like to keep pace with the course. Hence this pattern works best for learning the required material.

However, sometimes, participants may like to read ahead and watch videos in advance. For such folks, all eight weeks of videos have already been uploaded on the website:

Please note that the above links are only the videos from this course archived on the NPTEL site. These are not for the main course site. The above site will not have assignments and discussion forum. For the regular course, please use the website:
https://onlinecourses.nptel.ac.in/noc17_ge02/

Happy Coding
