Final Exam: Important Announcement and Details

Dear Students,

As you must be aware the registration portal for final exam is now open. I strongly encourage each of you to consider writing the exam.

Please consider the following VERY IMPORTANT aspects of the exam:
  1. The final exam consists of TWO PARTS. The FIRST one consists of a WRITTEN exam, that is of descriptive / subjective type, while the SECOND one is MATLAB-based. As you must have observed, the Assignments consisted of both theory and practice questions. We would like to retain this model for the final exam as well in order to do full justice to the course and in the best interest of the students.
  2. The present registration is for written exam, but also assumes that you will write the MATLAB-based exam.
  3. Weightage for the final exam, as per our early announcement, is 75% towards the total score. This will be split as 45% for the written part and 30% for the MATLAB exam.
  4. MATLAB exam will be held on two dates (for your convenience) - October 08, 2016 and October 09, 2016 from 9:00 AM to 12:00 noon (on both days) while the written exam, as announced already, will be held on October 16, 2016 and October 23, 2016 from 2:00 to 5:00 PM
  5. Instructions on "how to register" for MATLAB-based exam and other related details (e.g., MATLAB access) will be sent out shortly.
  6. Sample questions (for the final and MATLAB-based exam) will be posted by September 25, 2016.
If you have any questions on the above, please feel free to post them up for discussion / answers.

best wishes,
Arun

Regarding the use of WAVELAB toolbox: Intro to TFA and WT

Dear Friends,

As you must have observed, some of the lectures this week (and the upcoming ones)  contain MATLAB examples that use the WAVELAB toolbox. If you wish to run or test these examples using MATLAB online, it may not be unfortunately be possible to do so since MATLAB Online in its present form does not have support for this toolbox. The prime reason is that the WAVELAB toolbox contains a few MEX files, which are difficult to use with MATLAB Online. On the other hand, there should be no issues using this toolbox on your desktop version.

In order to overcome the above issue, we are in the process of re-writing those specific examples using the routines of Signal Processing Toolbox and/or the Time-Frequency toolboxes in MATLAB. These re-written routines will be posted in the earliest possible time.

Thank you for your understanding and patience in this matter.

best wishes,
TAs

MATLAB Tutorials: Introduction to TFA and WT

Dear Friends,

It gives us great pleasure to announce the availability of MATLAB Tutorials prepared by a team at MathWorks (the makers of MATLAB).

These tutorials are available on the course website in the form of links to short videos, especially tailored for the course.

A good working knowledge of MATLAB is essential to the practicing aspects of this course as will also be evidenced in several of the upcoming video lectures. Therefore, we strongly encourage every participant (even if you are already familiar with MATLAB) to watch these tutorials and learn how to use it in a correct and an efficient way.

best wishes,
Arun

Questions pertaining to MATLAB: Intro to TFA and WT

Dear Friends,

All questions and issues related to MATLAB (for this course) may be posted to the category titled "Questions related to MATLAB? Post here" on the forum.

Maria from the MathWorks MOOC Support Team will join us in answering all such questions.

Please use that category exclusively for all MATLAB questions.

Thank you.

best wishes,
Arun

Relese of remaining video lectures for Week 1: Intro to TFA and WT

Dear Friends,

The remaining video lectures (Lectures 2.1, 2.2 and 2.3) have been uploaded now on the course website. The text versions for all the uploaded lectures are also available for download (at the link on the right top corner of the video lecture).

The total duration of video lectures for the first three weeks is roughly 2 hrs. 40 min. , slightly above the slated 2.5 hrs for a 12 week (30 hrs.) course. For the subsequent weeks, the maximum duration is 2 video hrs. / per week. The reason for this slight imbalance is that the basics are (relatively) lighter, whereas the core concepts require more attention and therefore shorter duration videos for ease of understanding.

Please do post any questions that you may have on the appropriate topic in the forum.

best wishes,
Arun

Online access to MATLAB Intro to TFA and WT

Dear Friends,

It gives us immense pleasure in announcing the access to MATLAB Online, a product of MathWorks that provides access to MATLAB online for ALL enrolled users of this course at no additional cost!

Let me re-iterate - all users WHO ARE ENROLLED in this course will be able to use MATLAB on the cloud, that is through a web browser.

This is a fairly new initiative by MathWorks to help the conduct of MOOC Courses (that use MATLAB) in a smooth manner. With this facility, all users are brought onto the same platform and stand to benefit fully from the course.

We sincerely hope all users of this course will use MATLAB Online in all sincerity and diligence.

Instructions on HOW TO ACCESS MATLAB Online (first-time registration, etc.) will be posted on a separate page in the course website. Video tutorials on how to use MATLAB Online (if you are already registered for MATLAB Online) are available under the MATLAB Tutorials.

Enjoy the access and work out the examples n the video lectures as well as assignments!

best wishes,
The Course Team
