Friction and wear of materials: principles and case studies

ABOUT THE COURSE:

While the tribology is generally considered as related to mechanical engineering and design, the ever-increasing demand for the development of advanced materials for tribological applications necessitates a methodical understanding of tribology in materials science perspective. The proposed course is designed to provide knowledge on basic concepts of tribology as well as to understand the state of the art findings in friction and wear for a range of advanced material systems. The microstructure-properties-performance relationship is highlighted in understanding the behavior of the material in given wear conditions. Assignments on qualitative as well as quantitative understanding of tribology concepts will be provided.

ABOUT THE INSTRUCTOR:



Dr. B.V. Manoj Kumar is currently working as Associate Professor in the Department of Metallurgical and Materials Engineering, Indian Institute of Technology Roorkee. He has been teaching courses related to materials science, engineering ceramics and composites, and tribology for the more than 07 years. His research interests include tribology of advanced materials, development of structural ceramics and composites.

 

Prof. Bikramjit Basu is currently a Professor at the Materials Research Center with joint appointment at the Centre for Biosystems Science and Engineering and Interdisciplinary center for Energy Research at Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore. He served on the faculty of IIT Kanpur during 2001-2011. As a researcher, he has made pioneering contributions towards innovative research at the intersection of multiple Engineering disciplines and Natural Sciences, to develop a wide spectrum of structural materials with wear resistance properties. Professor Basu has the rare distinction to receive India’s highest Science & Technology award, the Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar prize (2013); and to get elected to the National Academy of Medical Sciences (2017), Indian National Academy of Engineering (2015) and to the National Academy of Sciences, India (2013). He is the third Indian from India to get elected to the college of Fellows of the American Institute of Medical and Biological Engineering (2017). He has received the ‘National Bioscience award’ from the Government of India in 2015; ‘Metallurgist of the Year’ award from the Ministry of Steels, Government of India, in 2010, and the NASI-Scopus award from Elsevier in 2010. He remains the only Indian from India, till date, to receive the prestigious ‘Coble Award for Young Scholars’ from the American Ceramic Society in 2008.

COURSE LAYOUT:

Week 1  :  Introduction; surfaces; friction; contact temperature; lubrication
Week 2  :  Wear, wear mechanisms
Week 3  :  Friction and wear of advanced metallic materials; basic fabrication concepts and overview of bioceramics and biocomposites
Week 4  :  Processing concepts of ceramics, mechanical behavior of brittle materials; wear behavior of ceramic composites
Week 5  :  Friction and wear of engineering polymers; Tribology of bioceramic composites, zirconia and dental restorative materials.
Week 6  :  Wear of nanoceramic composites; erosive wear of ceramic composites
Week 7  :  Cryogenic wear; Wear of high temperature ceramics
Week 8  :  Friction and wear of coatings, computational analysis in assessing wear, Closure

CERTIFICATION EXAM :
  • The exam is optional for a fee.
  • Date and Time of Exams: April 27 2019 (Saturday)  Morning session 9am to 12 noon; Afternoon Session 2pm to 5pm.
  • Registration url: Announcements will be made when the registration form is open for registrations.
  • The online registration form has to be filled and the certification exam fee needs to be paid. More details will be made available when the exam registration form is published.

CERTIFICATION:

  • Final score will be calculated as : 25% assignment score + 75% final exam score
  • 25% assignment score is calculated as 25% of average of  Best 6 out of 8 assignments
  • E-Certificate will be given to those who register and write the exam and score greater than or equal to 40% final score. Certificate will have your name, photograph and the score in the final exam with the breakup.It will have the logos of NPTEL and IIT Roorkee.It will be e-verifiable at nptel.ac.in/noc.
