This Course provides a simple understanding of the steam and gas power systems. The course contains the analysis of vapour power cycle i.e. Rankine cycle, steam generators and their accessories, Performance of Boilers and combustion of fuel, high pressure boilers, flow through steam and gas nozzles, different type of steam turbines for power generation and condensers. The gas turbine cycle, working of gas turbines, centrifugal compressors, axial compressors and combustion chamber of gas turbines.

COURSE INSTRUCTOR
Dr. Ravi Kumar is a Professor in the Department of Mechanical & Industrial Engineering, Indian Institute of Technology Roorkee. He has been teaching thermal engineering courses to UG and PG students of the Department. He is a member of ASME, ASHRAE and IIFIIR. He has supervised number of masters and doctoral students in this area.
COURSE LAYOUT
Week-1Review of Thermodynamics, Rankine Cycle, Performance of Rankine Cycle, Binary Vapour Cycle and Co-generation, Problem Solving.
Week-2Steam Generators, Fire Tube Boilers, Water Tube Boilers, Boiler Mountings and Accessories, High Pressure Boilers- LaMont and Benson Boilers.
Week-3High Pressure Boilers- Loeffer and Velox Boilers, Draught, Performance of Boilers, Combustion of Fuel,Problem Solving.
Week-4Boiler Trial, Nozzles and Diffusers-Momentum and Continuity Equations, Nozzles and Diffusers-Efficiency and Critical Pressure, Nozzles and Diffusers-General Relationship and supersaturated Flow, Problem Solving.
Date and Time of Exams: April 28 (Saturday) and April 29 (Sunday) : Morning session 9am to 12 noon;
Exam for this course will be available in one session on both 28 and 29 April.

CERTIFICATES:
Final score will be calculated as : 25% assignment score + 75% final exam score.
25% assignment score is calculated as 25% of average of best 6 out of 8 assignments.
E-Certificate will be given to those who register and write the exam and score greater than or equal to 40% final score. Certificate will have your name, photograph and the score in the final exam with the breakup. It will have the logos of NPTEL and IIT ROORKEE. It will be e-verifiable at nptel.ac.in/noc.
